Promotoras de Salud Become Certified Doula Instructors
Centro San Bonifacio (CSB) is now the only local agency and one of few nationally to train and certify doulas in Spanish.
Beginning with a grant from the Irving B. Harris Foundation, CSB organized the training with the help of midwifery consultant Mary Sommers and CSB’s newly formed Doula Advisory Board. The Advisory Board created a unique set of Spanish language training materials on which CSB can base future trainings. Board members also taught portions of the course that matched their areas of expertise.
“I’ve received completely positive reviews from the teachers,” says Sommers, “They were thrilled with the enthusiasm and the level of the participants’ questions.”
The next step for the course participants is to work with physicians and midwives at Parent Child Clinic (PCC) to supervise and mentor the 10 births required for certification from the Association of Labor Assistants and Childbirth Educators (ALACE).
“The ongoing mentorship and learning process for these course participants is what really makes this training special,” says Sommers. “These students get individualized, ‘on-the-job’ learning from experts. Plus, based on strengths and weaknesses identified during the training course, everyone has personal goals to focus on with their mentor.”
Mary first collaborated with CSB nine years ago to train Centro San Bonifacio’s original doulas, helping create the home visiting component of the Comadres Program. The program now carries a caseload of over 50 women per year, all of whom get 10 perinatal home visits.
This training allows CSB to host doula trainings for other agencies, greatly expanding the reach of the agency and heightening visibility among hospitals and clinics.
